Timely detection of high risk foot through routine diabetic foot screen examination by specially-trained foot care nurses capable of recognizing the complications of diabetes and foot problems of the geriatric client is an important component of prevention of the main complication of diabetes that can lead to foot amputations.

For a diabetic, a break in the skin may form an ulcer, if the ulcer is not treated properly or if circulation is impaired as in peripheral neuropathy, that is when nerves are not functioning correctly feeling is diminished or lost, as a result, the ulcer may not heal and can becomes infected to the point of limb amputation.
